SERVES: MAKES 3
PREP TIME: 2 HR 40 MINS
COOK TIME: 10 MINS
TOTAL TIME: 2 HR 50 MINS

Ingredients
  • 280g all-purpose flour
  • 7g instant yeast
  • 30g granulated sugar
  • 125 ml milk, lukewarm
  • 30g butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, beaten to brush the top
  • sprinkles, poppy seeds or almond shaving

Method:

1. In a small bowl, stir together the lukewarm milk, granulated sugar and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes.

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, softened butter, egg, and salt. Stir in the dissolved yeast and knead for about 10 minutes.

3. Transfer the dough to a oiled bowl, cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise for 1 hour.

4. Divide into 6 pieces. Roll each piece to form a 1-inch wide rope, about 14-inches long.
Taking 2 pieces, braid the rope, pinching the ends together and then loop into a circle. Make sure the ends are securely joined together.
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, providing enough room to rise.

5. Loosely cover the baking sheet with kitchen towel and allow to rise in a warm area, until it doubles in size, 45 to 60 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 240 C - 460 F.

7. Brush the top of each bread with the beaten egg and top with some sprinkles,  poppy seeds or almond shaving.

8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.
