Chewy bagels at home with only a few basic ingredients!

SERVES: MAKES 8 BAGELS
PREP TIME: 2 H
COOK TIME: 25 M
TOTAL TIME: 2 H 25 M

Ingredients
  • 300 ml water, lukewarm
  • 7g active dry yeast
  • 20g granulated sugar
  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 10g salt
  • pan with water for boiling
  • sesame seeds and poppy seeds
Method

1. To make the dough: Whisk the water, yeast and sugar. Add the flour and salt, knead until a smooth ball of dough begins to form. Knead for at least 10 minutes. Flour a bowl and transfer the dough to the floured bowl. Dust the dough with flour. Cover the bowl and allow to rise for 60 - 90 minutes or until doubled in size.

2. To shape the bagels: When the dough is ready, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Press your finger through the center of each ball to make a hole about 2 inches in diameter. Place on a lined baking pan.

3. Preheat the oven to 220 C / 425 F

4. To boil the bagels: Bring the pan with water to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-high. Drop bagels in, 2-3 at a time, making sure they have enough room to float around. Cook the bagels for 1 minute on each side. Drain the bagels and place back onto the lined baking sheet.

5. Sprinkle seeds on each bagel and bake in preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until golden to dark brown.

6. Remove from the oven and allow bagels to cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

*Freeze them for up to 3 months, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature, then warm to your liking.
