Classic Turkish 'Flour' Cookies (Un kurabiyesi)


Delicious Turkish cookies recipe

makes: 35 cookies

160 gr butter, softened
95 gr confectioners sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 sachet vanilla sugar
250 gr all purpose flour
Sprinkle with: some confectioners sugar


1. Preheat oven to 200c / 390 f and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Combine the ingredients in a large bowl. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and very pliable but not stick to your hands
3. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts. Using your palm, roll a piece of the dough into a cylinder about the thickness of a hot dog. Do the same with the other pieces of dough.
4. Use the tip of a fork and run it lengthwise down each roll of dough to create lines that are lightly scratched into the tops.
5. Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into equally sized rectangular pieces. Some cooks like to make the cuts at a slight angle for a decorative touch.

6. Place the cookies on baking tray, bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes on 200 c / 390 f. After 10 minutes, reduce the oven to 150 c / 300 f. Bake for another 10-15 minutes.
7. Remove the cookies from oven and let them cool down. Sprinkle with some powdered sugar.
