INGREDIENTS
- 6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 L hot water (100c)
- pinch salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 400 g ground beef
- salt and pepper
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
For the sauce:
- 50 g butter
- 2 tbsp all purpose flour
- 500 ml milk
- pinch salt and black pepper
- 80 g grated cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl with water and salt, let sit for 30 minutes. Drain and season with more salt. Set aside.
2. In a skillet, heat 1 tbsp olive oil, add the chopped onions and cook for about 2-3 minutes.
Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Add slat and pepper.
3. Add the tomatoes and cook for about 8 minutes more. Add more salt and pepper. Set aside.
5. Preheat the oven to 220C 428F.
4. Make the sauce: Heat a medium sauce pan over medium heat, melt butter. When butter has completely melted add flour. Whisk until smooth, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the milk. Whisking constantly. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the grated cheese.
5. Layer 1/2 of the potatoes in a dish. Spread the beef mixture over the potatoes in the baking dish. Spread 1/3 of the sauce over the beef mixture. Top with the remaining sliced potatoes and finally spread the remaining sauce over the potatoes.
6. Bake in preheated oven for about 50 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
